Tips for Safe Boating

Summertime is the most exciting time of year for avid boaters who live for the warm, salty air. But in order to enjoy the season’s aquatic adventures, it’s crucial to understand the inherent risks of boating and how to stay safe while on the water. We’ve compiled some general boating safety tips to help protect you and your passengers on your journeys.

  • Before heading to the marina, check the local weather forecast. It’s best to boat on a clear, sunny day for good visibility. It’s also smart to keep a weather radio onboard to monitor conditions as they change. man riding on white and red boat on sea during daytime
  • Be sure that you have the appropriate safety gear onboard. That includes a correctly sized lifejacket for everyone, fire extinguishers, flares, flashlights with batteries, plenty of bottled water, sunscreen and more.
  • There should be at least two people who know how to operate the boat onboard at all times in case the primary driver becomes incapacitated.
  • If you plan to take a longer trip, create a float plan that plots your intended course and travel dates. Then leave a copy with the marina. If you need help along the way, the marina will have a good idea of where to send it.
  • Remember that larger boats need more time to turn and stop, so be sure to give them plenty of space.
  • Similarly, give buoys and other navigational aids plenty of space as well to ensure that you don’t damage them or your vessel.
  • Slow your speed as you navigate through narrow or crowded spaces.
  • Do not operate your boat while intoxicated. The driver should remain sober so he or she can safely operate the boat and protect passengers.

By keeping safety in mind, you increase the risk of an accident-free adventure on the water.

Your safety is our priority. Call us for more information on boat insurance.
