- Before heading to the marina, check the local weather forecast. It’s best to boat on a clear, sunny day for good visibility. It’s also smart to keep a weather radio onboard to monitor conditions as they change.
- Be sure that you have the appropriate safety gear onboard. That includes a correctly sized lifejacket for everyone, fire extinguishers, flares, flashlights with batteries, plenty of bottled water, sunscreen and more.
- There should be at least two people who know how to operate the boat onboard at all times in case the primary driver becomes incapacitated.
- If you plan to take a longer trip, create a float plan that plots your intended course and travel dates. Then leave a copy with the marina. If you need help along the way, the marina will have a good idea of where to send it.
- Remember that larger boats need more time to turn and stop, so be sure to give them plenty of space.
